A Look Back At The 1962 Volvo P220 Amazon – HotCars

The 1962 Volvo P220 Amazon, among other models, boosted Volvo’s Hagerty automobile report as well as its worldwide reputation.
The P220 was a part of the Amazon family line-up that Volvo introduced in 1956 and continued production with various production models until 1970. The production unit under the Volvo Amazon name totaled over 600,000.
The P220, was one of Volvo's most iconic designs; it's an interesting piece of Volvo's automotive history within the 7 years of its production. Its first appearance was at the Stockholm Motor Show in February 1962.
The stylish 1962 Volvo P220 Amazon was designed by Jan Wilsgaard, the Chief Designer for Volvo Cars, for three decades.
Volvo had been known for producing station wagons right from the late 1940s. Two very popular models of the Volvo Amazon are the sporty p122 and the functional p220. Volvo Amazon enthusiasts prefer the newer series, particularly the 1962 model.
Volvo's vehicles, for example, the V70R, are not so beautiful cars; people usually only consider them because they are powerful and safe. Upon the Amazon release, people probably changed their perception since the car was also good-looking even though it was a fast and safe ride.

The 1962 Volvo p220 Amazon boosted Volvo's Hagerty automobile report and its reputation worldwide. It came out as a more sophisticated and developed version of its predecessor, the P120, which was initially produced in 1957 as a sedan. The P220, a fast, comfortable, spacious, and practical sedan, was displayed in Europe five years after the P120, and the P220 was produced simultaneously with the p210. P220 was seen a lot outside European vehicle markets, and Volvo became a top producer of estate cars.
In Europe and America, Volvo cars were the first luxury station wagon ever made that served functionality and comfort. Besides the wagon, Volvo also produced the 121 and 122S Amazon sedan cars. These trims were designed as two (131/132 Amazon) or four-door vehicles.
Volvo produced racing wagons like the 850R even before the popular Polestar. Volvo did well in designing sports cars, of which the Volvo 122S Amazon is one of its earliest achievements.
Engineered into this car is a powerful four cylindrical OHV, 1.8-liter engine of 75 to 90 HP. It operates as either a floor-mounted manual transmitted gear or as a 3-speed automatic transmission gear.
With four doors, the Volvo p220 is very easy to get into, unlike the popular two-door cars like the 122s where the front passenger has to get out to let other passengers in. There used to be hydraulic brake drums on the four wheels when they were first made but were later changed to having discs in the front wheels. It is 4.5 meters In length with a 2.6 m wheelbase. The trunk door has two parts, one folded up and the other, down. USA station wagons stimulated the idea behind this unique design.
This car still remains very special, judging by this age's standards with its contemporary and even lines. Its luxurious interior made out of good quality leather would still be a perfect match for contemporary cars. Also, it can accommodate long items because its 2-door tailgate bottom can be lowered.
On the Car seats are three-point belts. Volvo was the first automobile to come up with this kind of safety feature. This car is spacious even though it is not very big; it can accommodate even a 7ft tall adult conveniently. The split trunk opening was smartly designed to allow easy loading of items.
Of all the cars made at the time of its production, no station wagon seems to match up with p220 in terms of stability and dependability. A great feature about the p220 Amazon is the fact that its spare parts were readily available, which is a crucial factor to consider when purchasing new vehicles to prevent vehicle abandonment due to a lack of spare parts.
