Amazon Cloud Partner Boss Yeum Now Helping Take on Shopify, Chart Shows – Business Insider

Doug Yeum — ex-Amazon cloud partner network chief and former “shadow” to Amazon CEO Andy Jassy — has landed on a high-profile team within the company to go after Shopify, according to an internal organizational chart viewed by Insider.
Yeum left the cloud unit in December for an undisclosed role within the company’s retail business. The org chart shows he’s now working under Project Santos VP Peter Larsen as director of go-to-market for Project Santos with four direct reports. Yeum previously reported to AWS sales and marketing boss Matt Garman as head of worldwide channel and alliances and had nine reports, according to a previous chart also viewed by Insider. Amazon declined to comment.
Project Santos is the internal task force Amazon formed in 2020 to go after Shopify’s core small-business merchants. Jassy launched the project as a “defensive” move to respond to Shopify’s growing threat as a competitor.
The team has worked on a new point-of-sale system to lure merchants from Shopify, Square, and PayPal, Insider reported last year. The system is meant to help small business customers handle in-store and online transaction and provide inventory and business analytics, according to an internal document Insider viewed at the time.
Yeum’s move is part of the latest shuffle of executives that Jassy has made since taking over as Amazon CEO last summer.
The latest org chart also reveals Yunyan Wang, former shadow of past Amazon retail CEO Jeff Wilke, is involved in the project as a director of software development. A shadow is a sought-after position within the company that involves following the CEO to all meeting and often precedes important roles at Amazon.
