Rajasthan election result: The Congress party on Thursday (January 31) moved one step closure towards the magic figure of 101 in 200-member Rajasthan Legislative Assembly by winning Ramgarh assembly seat. Congress’ candidate Shafia Zubair Khan defeated BJP and BSP candidates by a margin of over 12,000 votes to bag the seat. The Congress has now 100 MLAs and it enjoys support of six BSP MLAs.
Polling in Ramgarh was held on January 28 with nearly 79% of the 2,35,625 voters exercising their franchise. The election was scheduled on December 7 along with the rest of Rajasthan Assembly seats but was postponed after BSP candidate Laxman Singh died due to cardiac arrest.
In the Assembly polls held in December last year, the Congress had won 99 seats. But it managed to go past the halfway mark with support from the BSP and RLD.

The assembly elections are termed as semi-finals for the general elections slated to be held in April-May next year. This election was a last option for Congress to revive its fortune ahead of the Lok Sabha polls and the results have come as a much needed boost for its cadres who have only suffered a series of defeats post-2014 general elections barring Punjab. Both the BJP and Congress know that the outcome will have an immense impact on the political equations in the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls. Also, the results have come as an incentive for the Congress to project its president Rahul Gandhi as the leader of the proposed grand alliance in view of reservations expresed by several ky leaders on his leadership style.
