BROOKFIELD — More than a year’s worth of speculation over the identity of a newly built grocery story ended over the weekend after crews finished installing the large Amazon Fresh sign above the entrance of the building at 14 Candlewood Lake Road.
Now, the question is: When will it open?
“I can confirm that Amazon will open an Amazon Fresh grocery store in Brookfield, CT.,” a spokesperson for the company told the News-Times Monday morning while declining to offer details on when it might welcome its first customers.
First Selectwoman Tara Carr confirmed the spokesperson’s message, saying the town has, “no specifics on [a] timeline for when residents can expect the store to open,” but said the new grocery store will be a welcome addition to the community.
“We look forward to welcoming Amazon Fresh in Brookfield as Amazon will be a good corporate partner and will create quality jobs for our community,” Carr wrote in an email.
The mystery — and accompanying hints — over the identity of the future Brookfield grocery store’s owner began unraveling with the submission of a site plan modification for the property at the 14 Candlewood Lake Road shopping plaza in October 2020.
The property formerly hosted a TJ Maxx location, but at a October 22, 2020 meeting of the Brookfield Zoning Commission, representatives for the plaza’s owners, Raymour & Flanigan, noted difficulties in securing a new tenant for the space as a way to underscore the need for their new, prospective tenant, to remain anonymous.
“…The proposed grocery store client is extremely secretive, as a product of the company’s foundation as a technology company… there is only one of these stores open now in the country,” said Trevor Edkin, Director of Leasing for Raymour & Flanigan, according to the minutes.
By the end of last fall, an updated site submission to the Zoning Commission brought more clues to the identity of the grocery store’s owner with architectural designs for the building’s signage showing resemblance to existing Amazon Fresh stores. Still, there was no official word on whether or not the tech-giant was behind it all.
“If you look at the designs and you look at the other stores that are out there, it’s not hard to figure out who it is, it’s not, but they’ve asked us to keep quiet, and we have,” then-First Selectman Steve Dunn commented to the News-Times.
With so much effort brought to protecting the name of the future grocery store, the sudden appearance of the Amazon Fresh signage over the weekend caught some suspecting Brookfield Town Hall employees off-guard.
“We are actually surprised ourselves that the sign went up,” said Planning and Land Use Director, Greg Dembowski, who referred questions to Brookfield’s Zoning Enforcement Officer, Francis Lollie.
“I wasn’t aware of it, so it was news to me, too,” said Lollie on Monday. “I had an idea of which grocery store it was going to be but without actually knowing or seeing the sign going up it was hard to say.”
Lollie explained how the sign design submission filed in October 2021 did not use the “Amazon Fresh” logo for the signage.
While the signs installed read differently than those in the plans, Lollie said he did not anticipate any delays or repercussions coming from the sudden signage work, “as long as they apply within the regulations — which they do,” he added.
“Once I caught wind of it, I had to notify the sign-installer who is in the process of now working with the building department to revise the application to reflect the Amazon Fresh signage,” Lollie said. “I did speak to the individuals at Amazon, and advised them of the same thing, too.”
Brookfield Amazon Fresh — the first in New England?
If it opened today, the Amazon Fresh location in Brookfield would mark the site of the company’s first store in New England, but further expansion in Connecticut and across the northeast is already in the works.
An Amazon Fresh location is expected to open in Westport sometime this year despite a recent hiccup over sign-design approval with the town’s Zoning Board of Appeals, according to the company.
In Orange, officials recently approved site-plans for a yet-to-be-named grocery store at another former-TJMaxx space that is also owned by Raymour & Flannigan. According to Burt Flickinger, managing director of New York City-based Strategic Resource Group, the zoning approval includes all the hallmarks of an Amazon Fresh location.
“I’m very familiar with for their site location and this checks off all the boxes,” Flickinger told Hearst in February.
In Massachusetts, local media outlets reported last fall that two Amazon Fresh locations were in the works, one in Saugus and one in Braintree, according to a report from WCVB-TV. Last month, Amazon announced it would begin hiring for its yet-to-be opened New Jersey and New York locations.
Seattle-based Amazon also owns Whole Foods Market, which has more than 500 locations across the U.S., including 10 in the Connecticut.
The tech-giant opened its first Amazon Fresh store to the public in Los Angeles in September 2020 — one of 31 locations currently open for business in the U.S. today; along with 17 in the United Kingdom.
The most recently opened Amazon Fresh location, a 35,000 square foot space in Huntington Beach, Calif., became the the 15th store to open in the golden state last Thursday. Other U.S. states hosting multiple Amazon grocery locations include Illinois, Washington, and Virginia.
The stores’ concept allows for both traditional and online grocery shopping to customers who can choose from a variety of pick-up and delivery and payment and checkout options, including its Just Walk Out technology, “which gives customers the option to skip the checkout line,” and will be available at the Brookfield store when it opens, according to the Amazon spokesperson.
